Zoey's Love Story

When the ER vet told us that Ellie’s Rainy Day Fund would help, a huge weight was lifted off our shoulders. Our sweet angel wasn’t going to wonder what happened yet again. We get to be there for her just the way we desperately wanted to. My husband is back to sitting on the couch so he doesn’t disturb Zoey who’s all curled up in his recliner. I’m back to having my lap completely covered and my face thoroughly “washed”. My sons are back to having 45 pounds of wagging flesh to romp with. Thanks to you our family is still whole.

A Message from Zoey's Mom

We got Zoey two weeks prior to our panicked trip to the ER. I saw a post that a good Samaritan had found her running down the middle of the road and had stopped to get her out of traffic. Since he couldn’t keep her and attempts at finding her a foster home failed, I agreed to give her a temporary home. This was not my norm--to this day I’m not sure what came over me. Her picture just spoke to me!

I said we’d try her but she could only stay if she didn’t get aggressive with my 9 year old male dog or my two year old son. Aggressive? All she wants to do is cuddle and kiss! She’ll cover you with kisses from head to toe. She sits still agreeably when my son runs his matchbox cars the length of her back. I don’t think there’s an aggressive bone in her body.

In fact, for the first couple of weeks she didn’t want to leave our sides even long enough to go outside to potty. I think she was afraid of getting left. We discovered that her teeth were shaved down so she had probably previously been used as a bait dog. Now she was finally being shown some love and she didn’t want to risk losing that. It was clear after a short period of time, there was no one coming for her. That was more than ok with us, she’s our girl.

Just as she was getting more comfortable and starting to trust, it happened.

She headed outside with our other fur baby, Charlie, one afternoon and proceeded to try to chase a squirrel up a tree. Unfortunately coming down she gouged herself on the neighbor’s loose chainlink fence.

We immediately rushed her to the ER. I was worried sick, tears poured from my eyes. I was so scared we were going to lose the sweet girl we had all recently fallen in love with. She just started opening up, letting her guard down, then this. After hours of waiting on a treatment plan, the call finally came. Besides the exploratory surgery and the stapling, she needed imaging to make sure her internal organs were OK. They told me the cost and my heart sank. My husband’s been off work for a year following major back surgery. I’ve had some large medical bills as well. And we have two kids to care for.

I gave them all the cash I had—I happened to be going to buy patio furniture when this happened. We were prepared to drain our savings. When your kid gets hurt, whether two legged or four, you do whatever is needed! But that still wasn’t going to get it done.
