Ellie’s Rainy Day Fund helped fix Mabel’s heart so she could continue to share her love.

A Letter from Mabel’s Brother(?)

My Mom has Alzheimer’s disease. I feel very blessed that it has not gotten much worse in the four years since I moved back to my childhood hometown to make sure she’d be safe and remain physically healthy. Our time together is precious and I look for the joy in each day.

Enter Mabel”one of the joys of both of our lives.

Three years ago on July 5, Mom I were enjoying a lazy afternoon on her sister’s porch when a skinny, young dog sauntered up and lay at Mom’s feet. She was house-trained, and such a calm presence that we figured she had somehow gotten lost. I searched for her owner, but to no avail. So I named her Mabel (my Mom’s aunt’s name), and Mom was able to remember it. Mom bonded quickly with her new fur friend, and I was thrilled to see new learning happening with Mom.

Three weeks after we took her in, Mabel had her first episode of collapsing. Was this why she no longer had a home? After many visits to the vet to diagnose the problem, it was determined she had an irregular heart beat and needed to see a cardiologist. The day before she was to see the specialist, I stayed home with her”both of us scared to death”as she suffered an attack of tachycardia for 5 hours!

When we saw Dr. Wright she said Mabel needed to have an abnormal pathway in her heart destroyed since her heart was already beginning to fail. Luckily for us, Dr. Wright is the only veterinary cardiologist in the country who can successfully destroy these accessory pathways through a procedure called cardiac ablation.

It’s been four months since Mabel’s surgery and she’s doing great! No more staggering and slumping to the ground. She’s eating like a horse. She’s the family clown! She gets in these crazy positions”Mabel yoga we call them”and she makes us laugh. She’s always lying right by Mom’s chair, or sometimes even hiding under it, with just her nose peeking out. Even though Mom wouldn’t let me have a dog growing up, she now depends on Mabel for companionship and support. I too find her a support. She’s someone to talk to, to keep me going on walks, and she’s a world-class snuggler!

Mabel wouldn’t be with us today if it weren’t for Ellie’s Rainy Day Fund. Mom wouldn’t have understood where her buddy had gone, and it would’ve been such an emotional void for us both without her. Thank you for helping our family to remain whole.
