Petey's Love Story

All the people who give to Ellie’s Rainy Day Fund were there to save our boy again. I burst into tears then and I still get teary now thinking about what you did. Petey’s out of the hospital now and he’s back home snuggling. He’s even beginning to look for his ball. THANK YOU for saving my baby! We know down the road his eyes will still need fixing but right now we’re just focused on the fact that our family is still whole!

A note from Petey's mom...

Petey joined our family two weeks after our 17 year old sweetheart Max passed away. I thought it was too soon for a new dog but my daughter was feeling so lost, and as it turned out it was just what we all needed. When she left for college a year later, he became mine and he’s been my shadow and my savior ever since!

I love my work with multi-handicapped kids but some days I come home just exhausted. But there’s Petey, greeting me at the door full of excitement, with his tail wagging his whole body. That never fails to bring a smile and give me a little burst of energy! Then too there’s all the company he provides when my husband is off working second shift. I think Petey invented snuggling! Thank goodness for that.

All our boy asks in return is that we play ball with him. We love to watch him doing his happy hopping run when we are playing. He may be 9 years old but in those moments he looks like a brand new baby bunny! He lives to play fetch & catch his ball.

So when he started stumbling and missing the ball, I feared the worst. You see, he was diagnosed 5 months ago with diabetes. When we discovered it, he was in ketoacidosis and he almost died! We took out credit and moved heaven and earth to get him treatment.

Now my schedule revolves around his insulin injections. I get up at 5:45am for his morning injection and I skip any dinner invitations to be home at 5:45 pm for his evening shot. And you know what? It’s totally worth it!

But missing the ball? Bumping into furniture? I feared he was going the way of many diabetic dogs and had developed cataracts. Which meant getting a consult with a specialist followed by some very expensive surgery. How were we going to swing that?

Ellie’s Rainy Day Fund saw how hard we work to care for Petey and how much he means to us and said they’d be honored to help. Little did we know the needed help would again be lifesaving!

The morning of his scheduled eye appointment we had to rush him to the ER where it was determined he was in ketoacidosis again! So he ended up in the ICU!
