Baby S’s Love Story

What would you do if a dog wandered up on your porch in such terrible shape that all you could say to your husband was, “Poor thing.  He’s just a big baby”?  How about if you knew you couldn’t take him in because you had small rescue dogs already to think of?

Baby (or Babycakes as we often call him) had been starved and beaten.  The teenage boy down the street was trying to make Baby mean so he could use him for fighting.  When he stayed gentle, the boy turned him out to the street.

How did we end up with the dog we “couldn’t keep”.  Funny thing.  He’d been on our porch earlier to get a little petting but he wandered off in search of food.  After it got dark, we heard a knock on our front door.  We opened it and there sat Baby.  To this day we feel like it was God knocking.

Eight years later, we are still thankful for our snuggle buddy (even if he DOES take up most of the bed).  In spite of everything he’s been through, Baby is the perfect companion.  He’s never met a stranger.  He will chase a tennis ball until your arm falls off from tossing.  His favorite thing in the world is to ride in the car.  But beware.  He ALWAYS calls shotgun.  Lord help you if you’re in the passenger seat when he gets in the car.

This boy makes our lives complete.  I’m on 13 different medications to manage my anxiety and depression.  They just didn’t help enough until Baby joined our family.  He is my super healer.  He can sense when I’m in trouble.  When he gets in my lap it’s as if he’s telling me everything is going to be OK.

When his leg got broken in that freak accident, I thought I couldn’t stand it.  We learned he needed it amputated or he’d be in too much pain to stay on this earth.  My husband and I are both on Social Security.  We just spent $1700 of Care Credit to fix his teeth.  We have no human children.  HE’s our boy.  What were we going to do?
