Petey M's Love Story

The donors of Ellie’s Rainy Day Fund are a blessing. Without you, Petey would have been dead. We would have been devastated. My children were inconsolable. My wife was anxious. I felt guilty. Our older dog just laid behind her bed waiting dejectedly. You are the answer to our prayers. While Petey is moving slowly as he recovers, he’s still busy giving each of us a turn with him on our laps. We couldn’t be happier or more thankful. Neither could he.

Petey M's Story…

I didn’t see our new puppy, Petey! I had a bad feeling. Had he found a hole in our 25-year-old fence? I rushed around the side of the house to check. As I rounded the corner, I saw him. He was lying motionless in the street. I could see the blood running out of his mouth from all the way across the yard. What was I going to tell our kids?

Petey had only been with us for 6 weeks but already they count on him for snuggles and laughs and a way to make every day better. He’s their best friend. What about my wife? She gets so much comfort from him as she grieves the deaths of her aunt and uncle, and worries about her father who is currently in remission with his cancer. And then there’s what he does for me. My mom passed away last year. She was my “go to” in all ways. Now Petey fills that role. Mom was a huge animal lover. I think she sent Petey because she knew I’d need a loving being I could always count on. Much as I had counted on her. Even our older Aussie has already become attached.

Petey has brought the playfulness back out in Nila. She acts like he’s her baby.

We got our beautiful boy when we were approached by a friend who was looking for help to rescue him from an abusive household. We were not looking for a puppy, but once we met him, our love for him was unconditional, and he fit into our family absolutely perfectly. We named him Petey because he looks like the dog in the Little Rascals movie.

It’s hard to adequately describe his personality. We’ve never had a dog that is such a supreme snuggler. Or one with such a zest for life. We say he has “happy feet” because of the way he proudly prances carrying whatever stick or toy is handy.

When he was hit, I immediately scooped him up and drove like a madman to our local vet. She worked diligently to get him stabilized for transport to the emergency hospital. There an orthopedic surgeon repaired the “complex break” in his leg.

I was figuring out how to afford the costs at our vet. But once a specialist was needed, it was going to be impossible. While my new business is going well, being self employed hasn’t left me with much cushion. I feared that I would have to tell the kids that their best friend was gone forever.
