The phone call telling us that Ellie’s could pay for her surgery was unreal. Your donors helping us was the best thing that’s ever happened to our family. You all are miracles! We couldn’t imagine life without Maizie. Thanks to you, we don’t have to.
Crazy Maizie is a Covid baby
My husband called me one Sunday in May of 2020 and told me that he screwed up and was pretty sure he was in trouble. He is a police officer, so my mind started racing trying to figure out what had happened.
He waited for me to ask what was going on and then told me that he had just held a German Shepherd puppy for over an hour. My response to him was, “You know that you can’t tell me that and expect me not to come get her and bring her home, right?” He laughed and said, “I figured as much.”
So I jumped up and told the kids (ages 13 and 10) to get ready because we had a surprise for them. After a long 30-minute drive consisting of a billion questions and guesses about the surprise, we finally arrived. When five adult shepherds met us, they caught on. “Are we getting a dog?!”
While we all love and adore Maizie, she is my son’s dog, through and through. He slept on the floor in front of her kennel for weeks when we first brought her home. They are absolutely crazy about each other.
My son has ADHD and he really counts on Maizie to help him stay focused. She guides him to let go of his frustration over challenges with school. She makes him laugh and helps him relax.
For example, Maizie loves water. She will put her feet in her water bowl outside and act like she’s swimming until all the water is gone. She’s been doing it since she was a puppy. You can see the joy on my son’s face whenever he is with her. No matter how bad the day, he makes sure to make time to play with her. And by the time they’re done, his world is right again. And if we happen to be there to watch, ours is too.
So when she stopped eating and didn’t seem able to interact, he was worried. Then when we realized she needed bowel surgery—surgery that we just couldn’t afford—he was inconsolable
He wanted to use the money he’d worked for and put back for college to try to save his girl. We decided to spend what money we had to give her a night in the hospital just in case. When she didn’t turn around, we were headed down to say our goodbyes.
The phone call telling us that Ellie’s could pay for her surgery was unreal. Your donors helping us was the best thing that’s ever happened to our family. How could we have done that to our son—forcing him to say goodbye? But what else could we do? Being able to tell him that she was going to be ok, was the best feeling in the world. You all are miracles! We couldn’t imagine life without Maizie. Thanks to you, we don’t have to.
