A message from Loki's Family:
We will never find words big enough to thank you. But we will spend the rest of Loki’s
life showing our gratitude.
We were in our backyard on an ordinary afternoon, just enjoying the day. Loki was doing what he’d done a thousand times—running the fence line, playfully racing the neighbor’s dogs. Then, in a single horrifying instant, everything changed.
One of the dogs lunged, grabbed Loki’s leg, and yanked it through the fence. The other three swarmed. They attacked his side. Loki’s screams filled the yard. When I reached him and saw the blood covering his body, I screamed too.
My “second son” looked like he might not survive.
Loki isn’t just a dog to us. He’s the dream I’d carried since I was six years old—the German Shepherd I’d always hoped for. He’s my perfect boy. The one who races my 4yearold to the door every day when I come home from work. My son’s shadow, his best friend, his comfort. The one who senses what each of us is feeling and responds with exactly what we need—soft cuddles when we’re hurting, goofy howls at dogs on TV when we need a laugh.
He even came on our honeymoon. That’s how much he’s woven into our family. Losing him was unthinkable.
As we rushed to the ER, the owner of the dogs promised he’d cover the emergency bills. But when we called from the hospital, he told us he’d never spend $6,000 on a dog—and then he stopped responding altogether.
My wife and I broke down. It felt like he had just sentenced Loki to death. We applied for Care Credit and were denied. I had just used my entire paycheck from my new job to catch up on overdue bills. We had nowhere to turn. And when the vet told us Loki’s leg was mangled beyond repair, our 4yearold—through tears—offered to give Loki his own leg so his best friend wouldn’t hurt anymore.
We prayed for a miracle.
And that miracle was you.
You—donors of Ellie’s Rainy Day Fund—gave Loki a second chance at life. You kept our family together when we were certain we were about to lose him. You stepped into the darkest moment we’ve ever faced and brought light, hope, and healing.
We will never find words big enough to thank you. But we will spend the rest of Loki’s life showing our gratitude.
With all our hearts, Loki’s Dad, Mom, and his human brother.
