Lucy was sent from an angel in heaven. She was meant to be a part of our family. We couldn't say goodbye because of an accident.
I felt terrible! We were going to lose our sweet puppy—the love of our lives—and it was all my fault.
We got Lucy on the day of my grandmother’s funeral. I was so distraught and I saw this guy at the gas station with a puppy in a cage. I asked if I could pet her. He said for $10, I could have her.
My grandmother raised me. Her funeral was incredibly hard. When I saw that little pup at the gas station, we had to name her Lucy. When I was little, grandma had a dog that looked identical to her. I felt like grandma sent me Lucy to help me through.
Lucy is such a gift. She has made it her job to rescue me from deep sadness and anxiety. She gives me a reason to keep going through my kidney failure and diabetes. She loves on my husband to distract him during the pain of his arthritis. She is the best
friend of my 3-year-old great niece.
So when I stepped backwards while cooking, and heard a scream and crunch, I was mortified. I quickly tried to change direction—resulting in my fracturing my arm and wrist—but it was too late.
We rushed Lucy to the Emergency Room, where we discovered her leg was broken at the growth plate. It couldn’t be repaired. I had $900. It cost $897 to stabilize her and figure that out.
Because we couldn’t afford the amputation we would’ve had to put her to sleep. We had just lost our other two dogs to tumors. We couldn’t lose Lucy!
But she was in so much pain. And she couldn’t walk. My great niece asked if Lucy was going to heaven to be with Bentley (our most recent loss).
Our dogs are our kids. We were about to lose another child. And even though my head knew better, my heart kept saying it was my fault.
But then Ellie’s Fund donors came to the rescue. Nobody has ever done anything this big for us. Now Lucy is running around on three legs like nothing ever happened. My husband, my niece and I feel blessed and incredibly grateful.
