As I sat sobbing at the ER, I wondered if I would have to surrender him, or worse…put him to sleep.  The donors of Ellie’s Rainy Day Fund were a miracle!  You prevented such deep heartache for my son and me.  You saved the best cat I’ve ever met.  Thank you for more cuddles and purrs and laughter and delight.

Hello.  My name is Edgar Poe.  I got my name because my mom loved that old guy’s stories and because she was about to move to Baltimore, where he’s a big deal (still).

The story of who I am in my family may not be as spellbinding, but it’s still a great tale (tail).

I am proud to say that I am a registered support kitty for my almost-ten-year-old human brother—and my mom.   My brother was born with a rare neurological disorder called Angelman syndrome.  He is unable to   walk or talk, has epilepsy, and eats through a feeding tube.

That just means he needs my special skills.  I know how to play with him gently.  When he holds up a toy, I bat it around with him.  And I ALWAYS keep my claws in. I know too when he’s feeling sad or lonely.  I’m his best cuddler ever, even if sometimes that means just lying next to him.

Oh, and I know what to do when I sense our mom is feeling lonely or anxious or worn out too.  I paw at her shirt until she takes the hint and lifts the bottom of it. Then I climb inside, snuggle in, and purr.  She looks like a pregnant lady and sounds like she’s carrying a loud motor.  Ha!

Anyway, I’m mom’s best friend.  It can get lonely for her taking care of a special needs kid—even one she loves to pieces!

So, imagine how awful I felt when, four days after my  brother’s last surgery, I had to stop cuddling and even responding, to everyone’s needs.  I couldn’t pee.  I kept trying but the pain was unbearable.  In fact, I was so out of it, I’m not sure what all happened.  I’ll let her tell you the rest.

A Message From Edgar’s Mom:

My sweet Edgar has gotten me through numerous surgeries for my son, an ugly divorce, and a move back to Ohio, to name just a few of our challenges.  He’s there for my son, our other cats and me.  Without him, our home just wouldn’t be our home.

When he got so sick, so fast, I was frantic.  While we are able to afford regular vet care, good quality food, treats, etc., a medical emergency that costs upwards of $10,000 is just not feasible for us—and I would guess for most families.
