The rise of being able to rent a private home instead of staying in a hotel for vacation. More families are now bringing their pets on vacation. For pets who love to be with us, it can be easier for them to travel with us than stay home or in a kennel. However there are some considerations to reduce everyone’s stress and make it enjoyable for everyone.

And just like we all have special needs and considerations when we travel, the same is true for the dogs and cats in our lives. To make the travel as stress-free as possible, keep in mind these tips:

• Ensure your pet is up-to-date on vaccines.
• Pack all of your pet’s essentials: food, water (and bottle some local water if your pet has a more sensitive stomach), any medications, kitty litter, and a favorite toy, blanket, or other comfort item that smells of home,
• Have a crate for your pet to travel in, this is important for your pet’s safety and your own, especially in the car,
• Have a special car harness if your pet wants to be out of their crate. Do not let them roam around in the car as it can be dangerous for your pet and distracting for you,
• Make sure that your pet has identification tags on his/her collar, especially if your pet isn’t microchipped,
• Stop frequently for potty breaks, and,
• Do not leave your pet alone in the car. Search for pet friendly restaurants or grab food from a drive-thru and find a park to picnic,
• If renting a home, check their pet policy before you book it.
• Contact where you will be staying to ask if it is pet safe. Many will provide baby gates to block off areas or provide a list of dog friendly parks and patios for diner out.

If your four-legged family member isn’t used to traveling in the car, or doesn’t do it frequently, it’s a good idea to have a few short car rides leading up to the big travel event so he/she will be more accustomed to the experience. If your pet gets car sick, your veterinarian may prescribe anti-nausea medications. Of course, make sure the car is kept at a comfortable and well-ventilated temperature for everyone’s sake!

If you are traveling by air, check with each individual airline regarding requirements for traveling with pets well in advance to make sure you comply with the rules and have everything you need. Most airlines even offer the option for in-cabin travel, but only for one pet per cabin.
