Smiley's Love Story

I cannot express how much Eliie’s Rainy Day Fund’s support meant to me and still can't, but knowing she would have a chance made my world seem more bearable. It was touch and go for a few days but with the wonderful care she received thanks to you she and I are together again. And yes, she is once again extremely exuberant! Thank You Ellie’s!!!

SMILEY'S MOM

A Letter from Smiley's Mom

On September 15th, 2019 my world fell apart. I was running late to a family event so instead of putting Smiley in her crate I let her run loose in the house with my other dog, Sadie. Less than 45 minutes later my neighbor called 911 to report a fire in my house. Another 25 minutes after that another neighbor texted me about the fire. I rushed home to find my world shattered.

When I arrived on the scene, I immediately asked about my fur kids. I lost the love of my life, my dog Sadie. The firefighters didn’t even know Smiley was still in the house. A few minutes later they brought her out. She had knocked over some things that needed sorting in the dining room and was underneath them. This turned out to be a good thing as it kept her low to the ground and helped somewhat to filter the smoke that got into her lungs. When they brought her out of the house she was stumbling and disoriented. The fire department immediately gave her oxygen and told me to take her to the emergency vet right away.

My second nightmare began at MedVet. My brother and I rushed Smiley there and were able to get her in with the best doctors she could ask for. Unfortunately, along with the best comes a cost. I put a deposit down and was able to spend a little time with her. Regretfully, I had to leave to return to my home to see what needed done. Leaving her was heartbreaking, but I knew she was in good hands and there was nothing I could do there at that time.

That evening, I had to deal with a lot of things. By far the worst one was trying to figure out if I could afford to save my puppy. I realized that as much as I needed her, there was no way I would be able to afford much more than the deposit I had already put down. So I was probably going to lose her too. Needless to say I didn't sleep much that night.

Morning came and with it the news that my Veterinarian had submitted a request for Smiley's care to Ellie's Rainy Day Fund and she had been accepted! To say a heavy load was lifted from my shoulders is an understatement. Smiley still wasn't out of the woods but now she would have a fighting chance.

She spent days in the ICU in an oxygen crate. When she tried to come out, she wheezed terribly and had to go right back in. The ER vet said she’d never seen a dog with lungs that damaged survive. One night early on, they even called me to come say goodbye.
