Hi, My name is Oscar. According to my mom, I’m “the family vacuum cleaner”. I like having a job, so why not that one? I guess it’s not the perfect job because it almost killed me!
See, I was out in the yard patrolling when I saw this wrinkly brown thing. So naturally I went over and bit it. I had to be sure this mushroom wasn’t a danger to the 9 and 12 year old loves of my life.
Next thing I knew bloody, nasty things were coming out of me at both ends. I felt wobbly and my heart didn’t act right. I was in serious trouble.
My folks rushed me to the ER—it was scary with big machines and lots of people with those listening things they put on my chest. They said that I was in 'anaphylactic shock'. Whatever it is, it felt bad! But by 11 pm I was so out of it, I didn’t even yip when then stuck a needle in me and gave me blood.
This nightmare just went on and on. I would have given up except I heard the one lady who was in charge of me say that my mom was calling in every three hours to check on me. Even at 2am. I had to hang on for mom and dad and my kids.
“Black dog” and mom’s old shirt kept reminding me I could do this. I’d had Black dog since the day I met my family—I’ve always carried him everywhere—but this time he was there for me.
Finally it happened! My heart went back to normal, I stopped having problems with my blood clotting. When I ate something and kept it down, there were happy tears from my family AND the nice people who’d taken care of me.
When I left the ICU, I sprang into mom’s arms. Then we had the best family hug. I thought my tail was going to come off from the super-fast wagging it was doing.
My mom wants you to know, “our family is deeply grateful to the emergency staff for bringing Oscar back from the brink, and the donors of Ellie’s Fund for covering most of the expenses that made that possible. You’ve helped us more the last two nights than anyone has ever helped us before. We’ve always told our kids that family is number one & we always support each other. To have people we don’t even know reach out & be there for us is beyond a family connection. You’ve shown my family the deepest empathy & thoughtfulness I could ever imagine.
Thank you for your generosity and patience for helping us out with Oscar’s healing. Thank you for keeping our source of comfort and of happiness in our lives.” You are miracles. You gave us a miracle.”
